Allan Mallinson began training for the Anglican priesthood at seventeen, took a three-year break to join the army but stayed for thirty-five, serving with both the infantry and cavalry worldwide, extensively in the MoD and latterly with the FCO. While serving he wrote this history of the regiment he commanded (Light Dragoons), and began the series of novels based on the adventures of Matthew Hervey, an officer in the fictional 6th Light Dragoons in the Duke of Wellington’s day, which Allan Massie described in the Spectator as having “done for the British army what C.S. Forester and Patrick O’Brian did for the Royal Navy”. After leaving the army to write full time, Mallinson was recruited by Simon Heffer to write defence column for the Telegraph. Antony Beevor, reviewing Mallinson’s 2009 book The Making of the British Army (recently updated and published in paperback) described him as “one of the most acute commentators on the problems [the Army] faces today.”

This first edition is scarce and usually commands high prices.
